Hi, I have two exact audio files that have different start times that I need to overlay perfectly. The waveforms are exactly the same, except one has an additional sound effect at the end that, and I need to combine them both so the two sound files start at exactly the same time. The first portion of the waveforms are identical, and I was wondering if there is someway to “autoalign” the start of the two tracks based on the waveform? Any help appreciated.
Not automatically, but once you have both files, one above the other, you can click-and-drag the name above the waveform to drag it left or right. (Import rather than open to get both files open in the same project.)
Zoom-in on the waveform so you can see the details, and if you zoom-in far enough you can see the individual samples and align them perfectly (but only if they are truly digitally-identical).
When you play or export they will be mixed. But note that mixing is done by summation so reduce the levels by -6dB (50%) before mixing to prevent clipping (distortion).
Also, if they aren’t perfectly timed and they drift apart, you’ll get “phasing” (comb filtering) when they are mixed.
Thank you, this works perfectly, exactly what i needed.
