Clicks / SBEs? when going from FLAC to WAV

I’ve recently started burning Video DVDs with 16bit 48kHz PCM stereo for playback of longer concerts. Some of the source files are 16bit 44.1kHz FLACs that I have successfully used WinAMP FLAC to WAV, Switch Sound File Converter for going from 44.1 to 48kHz, Lplex to make the VOBs and then CDBurnXP to make the DVD-V.

I just tried to use Audacity as a subistute for the WinAmp and Switch step, but got clicks at the start of each track / chapter on the DVD.

  1. Audacity 2.0
    import audio (16bit 44kHz FLACs)
change Project Rate from 44.1 to 48kHz
export Multiple using “other uncompressed” using WAV 16bit, using “Tracks” not “labels” which would insert audio before each label
  2. Lplex (generate VOB files from 48kHz WAVs)
  3. burn DVD using CDBurnXP for Video DVD

Could someone advise me on what might be wrong?

Thanks.

First off if you meant to write “Audacity 2.0” you have a very old version which includes an ancient version of libflac. Get 2.0.6 from http://audacityteam.org/download/windows.

Then I think you would have to experiment.

How long are the WAV files?

If you export one track by double-clicking in it then File > Export Selection…, then repeat for the next track, does it make any difference?

What happens if you press “Clear” in Metadata Editor before Export Selection or Export Multiple?

Does Lplex require audio files to be cut on frame boundaries of any description? If so you could enable Snap To in Selection Toolbar at the bottom, choose the required time format by right-clicking over the time digits to right of Snap To, then zoom in and click as close to the end of the track as you can. Then hold SHIFT and press HOME to select from the click point to the start. Try File > Export Selection… and repeat a few time using that technique.

Sorry, 2.0.6 for Audacity.

I discovered that WinAmp’s Disk Writer can write 16bit 48kHz WAVs directly from 44.1kHz FLACs. I tried that with Lplex and didn’t observe and SBEs. WAV files are 5 to 15 minutes, maybe 1.5 to 2 hours total for the DVD in most cases.

If an “SBE” is a sector boundary error and you believe that is the cause then I suggest you look at the Lplex and CDBurnerXP documentation and settings for possible clues as to the problem.

Did you try the things I suggested in Audacity?

If Lplex accepts cue sheets for the audio you may be able to join the imported files end to end in Audacity, export as one WAV file then mark the track breaks with the cue sheet. We can’t offer support for Lplex or CDBurnerXP, though.
