I have some MP3’s that have a bit of a washed treble sound in the higher range, similar to what you sometimes hear in satellite radio audio. I’ve tried Audacity low pass filters set at both 11K and 12K, experimented with 6 db and 12 db to try and suppress it. I’ve had some success, but wonder if anyone has other Audacity tool suggestions to try and clean this up? Thanks in advance!
MP3 throws-away information to make a smaller file. At lower bitrates (smaller files) more information is thrown away. It’s “smart” and it tries to throw-away details you can’t hear anyway but at low bitrates you get compression artifacts.
So… You can’t get-back what’s gone.
Also, when you open an MP3 for editing it gets decompressed. If you export again as MP3 you are going through another generation of lossy compression and some “damage” accumulates". (Re-saving at a higher bitrate can minimize the additional damage, but it still happens.)
With all of that out of the way… You can try experimenting with the Graphic Equalizer. You can also try the Exciter Effect to “add back” some higher frequencies. Then you should export as a higher bitrate.
