Chaptering a MP3 record

Dear eminent audacity users and experts,

I am actually looking for a way to chapter a mp3 records in order to access directly from the most common audio solution (VLC, WMP, …) to a specific part of the record.

The issue is that the labels are only exported as a text file and doesn’t belong to the ID3 tags, which properties enable to chapter.

Do you have alternative that can answer my needs?
Maybe am i missing an Audacity feature.

Thank you a lot for your help.

Probably the most widely supported method is to export each chapter as a separate file, then create a “play list” (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3U).
Most media players support play lists.

But isn’t it possible to chapter an MP3 file without producing separate and multiple files ?
The goal is to navigate within an MP3 recorded file by cliking on the list of labels or chapter.

Maybe, but you’d have to find a player that supports it.

If it’s just for yourself you can search around an maybe find something like that, but if you want to share the files with others they won’t see the chapters on Windows Media Player, or whatever they are using.

If you make separate files you can add track numbers to the metadata and the media player can play in track-number order the same way an MP3 music album will play the songs in the correct order. And of course, you can prefix the file names with the chapter number.

I believe AAC and iTunes does support chapters, but I’ve never tried it.

You can try http://id3v2-chap-tool.sourceforge.net/ but don’t expect many MP3 players to recognise the chapters. Also that application requires Java which is a potential security risk unless you keep Java updated.
