Chaotic noise in recording

Windows 10
External mic
Audacity 2.4.2

I’ve tried everything I can think of, from adjusting the length of the mic to the amp, to the volume settings of the amp, mic, and Audacity. But when I record (with distortion, mind you), the playback just sounds like noise. I can’t figure out how to get it so that you can tell what I’m playing even with distortion, but also can’t hear my strumming.

Also, while recording the sound seems to lower on its own in Audacity around 15-16 seconds.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

Audacity can’t do that, but Windows audio enhancements can.
You should switch off all enhancements in both recording & playback tabs ,
Here’s how to do that … https://youtu.be/sxnUjiGgBaI

If you’re just getting howling feedback, ensure “software playthrough” is unchecked …

That helped big time, thank you!
