Can't record laptop sound from radio (3.7.1)

Hi,

Merry Christmas, hope somebody can help!

I’m trying to record sound from my laptop (a readio show) and not able to do it.
i’ve been doing the same for years but this year have a new laptop and new Audacity 3.7.1 and it doesn’t work. I have only 2 settings for recording decice, Microphone or Speaker (both built in). Speaker works to an extent but it is just recording the sound like an 80s cassette player where it only records at the volume level it’s playing at, and not very well, it¨s not taking the information through the computer.

I’ve tried all the settings on Audacity but can’t get it any better.

Settings are
Host = Windows WASAPI
Recording device = Speaker Realtek(R) (loopback)
Sample rate 48000 (same as speaker)
Computer is Windows 11

Thanks for reading

“Audio Enhancements” can be on by default.

Hi Trebor, thanks for your reply, I tried it but it hasn’t made a difference.

See the soundwave below, starts off on full volume, recording is only about one third normal level even then, as volume is turned down the recording disappears altogether so clearly just recording from the noise rather than the signal.

Same recording using my old laptop on Audacity 2.3.3.

The new version might be good for basement recording studios but it doesn’t do the basics

Hi,
Recently, I’ve started using ocenaudio for capturing audio, saving as a wav file and then switching to Audacity to do editing and exporting. That works well for digitising cassettes and LPs, so far. Ocenaudio is more responsive on my (very) old laptop where any kind of multi-tasking is a no-no. Alternatively have a look at the very capable Waveform Free DAW or Reaper.
Hope that helps.

Enable Stereo Mix in Windows Audio Preferences, then select Stereo Mix as the recording device in Audacity
