Can't hear sound while recording - any ideas?

Hi, I am trying to use Audacity 1.1.13-beta to record songs while I play them on my Yamaha YPT-300 digital keyboard.
I have connected the keyboard earphone output to my laptop microphone input and headphones from the laptop output.
After experimenting with the settings, I am able to record what I play, but can only hear it when I play it back. I do not
hear it while I am recording it. (I also have connected the keyboard and laptop using the Midi lines for use with Acid Pro,
but have had no luck getting that to work at all.)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. By turning the keyboard volume up and microphone setting down, I have achieved very good sound quality.

You can hear what you are recording via headphones plugged into the computer if you tick the “software playthrough” box in Audacity preferences, however I suspect the sound will be delayed.
tick the box I have coloured yellow to hear whilst recording via the computer headphones, (however the sound will be delayed).png

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Do you think that I could split the keyboard output without loss of quality?

You can plug your headphones into your keyboard and via a splitter, also drive your computer with no problem, but you can’t change anything during the performance.

And that worked? It usually doesn’t. If the sound is OK and not crunchy or distorted, then you may be good to go. You may be only recording the Left side of the show without the Right. My keyboard plays in stereo with depth effects for some of the Organ stops. To record those performances I would need a real stereo input. Microphone is generally mono.

Koz, it works really well…great sound. The output is definitely stereo too. Just wish I could hear it is real time.

Thanks for your post.

Technically, a splitter cable is not an ideal solution, but splitter cables are inexpensive and it usually works well.

You’ll need to find one that has the right connections for your equipment, but this is the type of thing:

Thank, Koz. I’m on my way to Radio Shack now.

The splitter worked just fine. Now I can hear while I record. However, I do have to listen to the playback on the notebooks speakers, but still, better than before. Thanks.

P. S. Setting the Preferences to passthru produced a terrible delay and sound quality.
