Can't hear sound in Audacity 2.4

Hello

I am trying to edit a MP3 file in Audacity but there is no sound when I click on the Play button. My speaker is working fine because I can hear sound, and see its related video, in MP4 mode on my desktop Win 10 PC.

I have selected File ! Import ! MP3 file to bring it to the editing screen on Audacity, but as i say no sound when I when I Play. What am I doing wrong, please?

The file I am trying to play as a MP3 file is of type: MP3 Audio File (VLC) (mp3)

Some things to check -

Make sure you’ve selected the correct Playback Device (usually your regular soundcard).

Do you see the waveform? Does it “look like” it’s playing? Do the meters show anything?

Check the playback volume control slider which is “hidden” under the playback meters.

Hello Doug

Thanks for you reply. Yes, I can see the waveform and the ‘bar’ that moves from left to right after I have clicked Play. The time counter, showing h m and s is also moving. The Start and End of Selection meters don’t move. I think the soundcard is working because when I play the original MP4 file, I get sound through the speaker.

I am unclear about the playback volume control slider. How would I access it?

Thanks again.

Hello Doug

Thanks again. I have changed the little drop-down box with MME ! Windows DirectSound ! Windows WASAPI from MME to Windows DirectSound and it seems to be working now!

Many thanks!
