Can't dispose of click sounds

No matter how much I try, I cannot get the clicking sound off of my podcast recording. It’s consistent for the entire run of the recording. I tried the Click Removal feature in Audacity, but could only do it for a few seconds at a time and not the entire recording (even after selecting the whole recording).

I attached a sample of what I’m hearing. Any help you can give me would be great. Thanks!

could only do it for a few seconds

That may be the clue. Is your machine starving? Audacity tools and effects use high memory and lots of hard drive space. If you’re short of either one (or both), you can get some very entertaining problems.

So an underpowered, wimpy machine is likely to create damage in your recording and unlikely to be powerful enough to fix it later.

Did I hear two different voices in that clip? How are you getting those voices into your computer?

This isn’t a simple ‘Push This Button’, so you get to start describing your studio and how you have everything connected and to what.

Are you putting USB microphones through a USB hub? Don’t do that.

I actually was using Skype and Pamela to record a podcast with two other people. Interestingly enough the clicks are there too when just playing the MP3 on its own in addition to when imported to Audacity.

Yes, it was a USB headset (the Everyman) I was using for my own voice. I’m not sure what the others were using. I’ve always used this headset to record but on other computers. I had to get rid of those and use an older laptop, so I’m thinking it could be that reason as you were eluding to before.

Again, I can fix this a few seconds at a time, but for a one hour podcast - that’s going to take me some time. Any other way I can get rid of them that we know of would be great to know.

There is not enough information in your posts  . What version of Audacity and what version of Windows? See the pink panel at the top of this page.

You may need to go through all these suggestions http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Managing_Computer_Resources_and_Drivers .

If you are on Windows XP, point 21 in that link could be important.

I’m using Audacity 2.0.3 on my Windows 7 machine. I obtained the .exe installer for this. Please remember though that even on the MP3 I created out of the Skype/Pamela recording, the clicking issue is still happening.

I looked at the wiki and while it’s helpful, it’s really more for optimizing the laptop before I do a recording. I unfortunately did the recording before all of this, so what I’m really looking for more is a solution to my current recording in Audacity (if possible) and then I can follow these suggestions for future recordings.

Click Removal does ameliorate the clicks on your sample if you reduce the Threshold.

You may get better results with click removal in other software but you have a badly damaged recording that you will not remove the clicks from entirely without damaging the voices.

You might want to look at ClickRepair - see this sticky thread: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/click-pop-removal-clickrepair-software/1933/1
