I have used Audacity for years, but just upgraded to Monterey and to Audacity 3.1.3. Now, when I try to save or export a file, the save/export window opens and freezes; the only apparent ‘solution’ is to Force Quit. I have uninstalled and re-installed, but I have the same problem. What am I missing or doing wrong? Thanks in advance.
Windows guy here.
So others have reported this issue, but only very rarely. I was going to suggest uninstalling and reinstalling, but I see you have already done that. One Windows user fixed the problem by reinstalling to a different location.
Are you downloading from here: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/ ?
Does this issue happen with every project or just with one or two in particular ? If you create a new, one-second recording, will that save ?
Are you using an internet or cloud drive ?
Note that the new version of Audacity will pause (or seem to hang) on exit as it is clearing out redo information and compacting your project file. Patience is the cure for that.
Perhaps someone with more Mac experience will offer some ideas.
You could try resetting Audacity’s preferences.
With Audacity not running.
Go to ~/Library/Application Support/audacity .
Rename the file “audacity.cfg” to something like “audacity-old.cfg” (so you can restore it if you want to later).
Now start Audacity - it will create a new, default settings file.
Add some audio to the project and try to save it.

Thank you, Bill and jademan. Still no luck, alas. It is very odd-- the “save” button flashes for a microsecond but then remains grey. “Cancel” is not responsive, and I cannot change the save-to destination. The only way out is to force quit. I can import sound files with no problem. I have reinstalled several times, all with the same result.

I am downloading from that location.
The problem affects every project, and I would be saving to a cloud drive-- but, as mentioned, the “Save” button is de-activated (and the “Cancel” button, while apparently active, it is unresponsive)
Good!
Audacity and cloud drives do not play together well. I would strongly suggest working totally on a local drive, then copying to your cloud drive outside of Audacity.
