Cannot (1) save or export, (2) move clip, (3) trim clip

I am using Audacity 2.12 on a Mac running 10.9. Audacity used to work for me, but it has become useless.
(1) I want to trim part of one track but the delete command is greyed out. See screenshot where I have selected a small portion on the bottom track using the “I” bar and clicked on the menu command to edit, but it is all grey.
(2) I want to move another track to align it with another track - I see no way to do that at all.
(3) Every now and then I can export my track, but mostly I cannot. The commands are grayed out, and there is nothing I can do or click on to bring them back.
(4) Same thing with the save option - most of the time is is greyed out. See second screenshot.
I am frustrated beyond belief. There is nothing about this in the help manual.

We should probably hit that first. There is no Audacity 2.12 or OS-X 10.9.

There is a fake Audacity 2.12 that doesn’t work very well, so if that’s really what you have, we need to know that.

I’m using Audacity 2.1.2 and I’m typing on an OS-X 10.9.5 machine.

Just to cover the simple things: Audacity tools, effects and controls don’t work from Pause. Only Stop. So if you Pause in the middle of a segment expecting to Export Selected Audio, that’s probably not going to work.

Sorry, typo - I left out a period. It is 2.1.2. I am on OS 10.9.5,

Your posted images look like playback is “paused”. Most actions are disabled during play / Record / Pause.
Press the “Stop” button to stop playback (or use the spacebar).

See Why can’t I use the effects or other menu items?.

The easiest way is to use Time Shift Tool: Time Shifting - Audacity Manual.
