Can no longer see wave forms when recording??

New to Audacity for podcasting – last night all was good- today can no longer see blue wave forms when recording. Audio plays back fine and I can see wave forms then, however - when recording the screen moves but is blank. Any ideas?? I have uninstalled Audacity and reinstalled, still not working. Thx

Which version of Audacity? (Look in: “Help menu > About Audacity”).
If you are using an old version, the current Audacity 2.3.1 version is available via the Audacity website: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows/

Did you install Audacity with the “EXE Installer”?

Yes and Yes

Audio plays back fine and I can see wave forms

So if you press record and say “Testing one two three,” there are no waves on the screen, but they pop into view when you press stop?

There are Audacity settings which can record perfectly well, but do it off the screen on the right.

**i absolutely love audacity because i am a technical know-nothing. your inventor(s) created something even someone like i can use, and i use it judiciously, nearly daily. the issue i have is that this past week, SUDDENLY, i started being unable to see any wav forms when recording my voice. after much struggling and even downloading some type of latest-greatest update, i have uninstalled that latest update and now have reverted to a prior version 2.3.1 – and to my great relief it is much more user-friendsly AND shows the wav forms.
