Can I set a time limit on my recording?

Hello,

Let’s say I want to hit record and leave the house for an afternoon. Is there any way to configure Audacity to stop recording after, say, half an hour? How about 1 hour? How about 5 minutes? In other words, can I set the time limit on which Audacity will record audio?

Oh, and I’m running Windows 7 with Audacity 2.0.5. I also have Audacity on a Mac OS X but I’m not sure the version, but I can easily upgrade to 2.0.5 (assuming it’s available for Macs) so let’s just say I have 2.0.5 for the Mac as well.

Thank you for any forthcoming help.

Transport > Timer Record.

You should be really careful and recheck your settings when you get ready to leave the house. All the settings, not just the ones you adjusted. I got in trouble once by rolling the date by accident and didn’t catch it.

Another way is:

  1. Add a track (Tracks menu > Add New > Audio Track)
  2. Select from the start of the track to the time that you want the recording to stop http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/audacity_selection.html (using the Selection Toolbar is an easy and accurate method)
  3. Ensure Transport > Overdub (on/off) is on (checked)
  4. Press the Record button.

Recording will start in a new track, and stop at the end of the selection.

To remove the “dummy” track, click on the [X] in the top left corner of the track.

Thanks everyone for your help.
