Can anyone recommend a Windows tablet for Audacity?

I do a radio show/podcast and want to record on Audacity using a tablet. I can’t use Mac for my purpose (I use one at home) so I need to explore Windows. I need something I can talk into, whether by mic or direct, import MP3 from Internet then transfer MP3 to my Mac. The reason I want a tablet is that I need something as light as possible to take on holidays. I know other formats are better quality than MP3 for a lot of applications and in most peoples opinions. I don’t have any recommendations for tablets, but for “field recording” there are many good and extremely portable audio recorders (I use a Zoom H2). These usually record to a flash card, which can easily be copied over to a computer for editing.

Note that “field recorders” are very different from the old “dictaphones” in that they are designed for high quality audio.

There’s a huge range of field recorders available from Zoom, Tascam, Sound Devices, and others.

At the cheap end: Zoom H1essential (under $100)
At the expensive end: Sound Devices MixPre-10 II (around $1500)

The other point is: Tablets usually are iOS devices or Android devices. Since the Windows Phone is dead for some years now - are there any Windows tablets at all?

And no, as far as I know there is no Audacity for phones or tablets, not for iOS and not for Android.

I’ve been saying this a lot lately. Buy a audio field recorder. You can spend as much or as little as you want depending on the features you want. They are almost certainly less expensive than a good tablet. You can still edit with Audacity later.

If you don’t need to record voice, download YouTube content , edit etc all on the same device whilst on holiday, I’d second the field recorder idea. I use a Tascam DR-05XP and that’s pretty good. You can record on that and copy to your desktop later. It is WAY cheaper than a Windows tablet.

Thanks romontschun. My MacBook is heavy and when I go abroad I usually take under seat luggage. There are Windows tablets, like Asus do one. The fact that Audacity is Windows or MacOS and Apple tablets are IOS means I have to look at Windows option. Cheers Rob

FWIW: I’ve been working on porting Audacity 4 to the browser:

It’s not yet done, but that may make your choice of tablet somewhat easier as browser stuff should run practically everywhere

@LeoWattenberg Mh, the website of your project appears to be broken… I have tried 4 (Safari, Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera) browsers on macOS Sonoma and on macOS Tahoe - but I cannot see anything. For a short moment, some text appears, but then the page becomes solid white only (in Opera, it becomes black instead at night).

For nearly 8 years I used my Microsoft Surface Pro 3 for my podcast. I used it conjunction with my Zoom H5, but I could record directly to the Surface and have on occasion. You might need to buy USB mic for it. Since it is a Windows based tablet, Audacity will run fine on it. The only issue I can find is the expense. They are a tad on the pricey side. I liked the Surface so much, I upgraded to a Surface pro Laptop. It’s some good stuff. Highly recommended.
