Buzzing When recording from ION Turntable

I am using an ION TTUSB10 turntable to record and convert music from cassettes onto my PC/laptop.
Previously I was using a PC with Windows XP Pro operating system, and Audacity 1.2. This worked perfectly OK.

I am now using a laptop with Windows 7 operating system, so had to upgrade to Audacity 2.0.3
I am now having problems when recording. Whenever I start the recording, a loud “buzzing” can be heard in the quiet zones.
I have tried to remove the “noise” by using the Noise Removal effect, but this has not removed it entirely, and the recording is now got a heavy bass sound.

Hope someone can help me. The software worked perfectly OK and now I have ths buzzing sound.

Do you still get the buzzing if the laptop is running on batteries and not connected to the mains adaptor?

I assume you are connected via USB, not with the analog line-level RCA outputs?

This may not help, but noise is an analog phenomenon. It’s coming from the tape player or the turntable. Noise is not added to the digital signal inside the computer (unless you are using the analog mic input to your laptop).

As Steve suggested, it could be power-line noise getting-into your set-up through the computer’s power supply, but the noise is already in the digital signal that’s coming into the computer over the USB connection.

Noise reduction is never perfect. There can be artifacts (side effects). It works best when you have a constant very low-level background noise… i.e. It works best when you don’t really need it. Even with access to the latest high-end software, professionals still record in soundproof studios with really-good low-noise equipment.
