Bluetooth playback issue with 3.5.1

I’ve read various old threads about bluetooth playback issues. I tried reducing buffer size from an old post but it didn’t make a difference.

I am using Audacity 3.5.1 on macOS 12.7.4 (intel) on MacBook Air.

I first generated a click track but it’s unplayable. Playback makes stuttering clicks through my Bose QC35 headphones. It’s fine through built in speakers. I then tried an audio file and it’s the same; bluetooth device playback just generates noise like an annoyed fly.

I notice that the playhead moves normally when playing through inbuilt speaker but the playhead doesn’t move when playing through bluetooth headphones.

It’s probably obvious to say the headphones work fine with all other audio apps on my Mac.

System report says
Default Output Device: Yes
Default System Output Device: Yes
Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
Output Channels: 2
Current SampleRate: 44100
Transport: Bluetooth
Output Source: Default

I checked the sample rate matches but 44100 is the default so there was nothing to change.

Is there any way to get bluetooth headphones working or is it known to fail?
I’m using these headphones for their noise cancelling in certain environments so I don’t have a choice to use wired.

Thanks

Audacity is known to not play well with bluetooth headphones.
