Best workflow in Audacity for improving speech recordings from conferences and presentations

Hi everyone,

I’m fairly new to the Audacity community and have been exploring it for editing spoken-word recordings.

I often work with recordings from conferences, presentations, seminars, and similar events. Even when using external microphones, the recordings sometimes include room echo, audience noise, air-conditioning hum, or inconsistent speaker volume.

I’d like to improve my workflow in Audacity and was hoping to get some advice from more experienced users.

Some questions I have are:

  • What order do you normally apply effects such as Noise Reduction, EQ, Compressor, Normalize, and Limiter?
  • How much Noise Reduction is generally considered safe before voices begin to sound unnatural?
  • Are there any built-in effects that you find particularly useful for improving speech clarity?
  • Which export format and bitrate do you normally choose for sharing conference or presentation recordings?

I’ve read through several discussions, but I’m interested in hearing what workflows people are currently using.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Audacity does not have native tools to remove echo/reverb.

AI tools do, e.g. https://podcast.adobe.com/en/enhance (freemium)

https://acondigital.com/products/deverberate (not free).
