How can I take an edited excerpt of an audio (voice) track that was converted by Audacity to .aup format and change it to .wav format? This is critical for my work.

.aup is not an audio format. It’s an XML file that tells Audacity how to reconstruct an Audacity Project from a whole mess of small audio files (the .au files in the PROJECT_NAME_data folder). If you don’t have that _data folder, you don’t have any audio.
In order to get a wav file, open the project up in Audacity and then file → export.
