So I’d been using Audacity 1.2.6 just fine for a while, when all the sudden, as I was adjusting the master volume within Audacity, the program just completely stopped playing sound, even though the bars at the top still made it look like sound was being played. Nothing I did got it to play sound again, and the playback device was set to “Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)” as it always had been. My speakers are still fine with all other applications. So I uninstalled and upgraded to Audacity 2.0.5, but the problem still persists. Any suggestions?
Try reinstalling Audacity 2.0.5 and select the “Reset Preferences” option during the installation. When the installation is complete and you launch Audacity, you will be prompted to confirm that you want to reset the preferences.
Tried it, problem persists

Currently you have no input devices available other than the WASAPI loopback devices.
Go into the Windows Sound Control Panel and enable a recording device. There may be one or more listed as “mic” or “line” for “Realtek High Definition” or something similar. Probably hidden and disabled, so see the link for how to make devices visible and enabled.
In the “Host” box of the device toolbar, select “MME”.
Then you will need to set the recording device (in the device toolbar) to match the recording device that you enabled in the Windows Sound Control Panel.
My computer doesn’t have a built in mic, but plugging in a microphone and setting the recording device works fine. However, Audacity still isn’t outputting any sound, so I have to export and use a media player to hear what I just recorded/generated/editted.
OK, with your set-up now, and with the mic connected, and “Host” set to MME, could you do the “Device Info” thing again and post the contents.
If the green playback cursor and the meter bars are moving when you try to play audio in Audacity I don’t think this is a devices problem.
Are you sure all your Audacity tracks are unmuted?
Play some audio in Audacity. Left-click the speaker icon by the system clock, and choose “Mixer”. Make sure the slider for Audacity is unmuted and turned up.
Have you tried shutting down the computer then starting it again?
Gale
So it turned out Audacity somehow got muted in the mixer, which I don’t believe I’ve ever actually opened before. Weird, but it works now. Thanks and sorry for not checking that earlier.
