Hi all,
I need some advise on setting up audacity to record from line in and not the mic, so far i’ve gone in to sound and set both internal mic and the other mic to not listening but I plugged in the jack to the mic socket thinking this would be the line in but it sounded aweful, should I have used the headphone jack?
What exactly are you trying to record?
If your computer has a separate audio input then the headphones jack is only for audio coming out.
If your computer only has the one audio input it is almost always either a mic input (not suitable for line-level input) or it is a “compatible” input that can detect a stereo line-level input and adapt to it. However “compatible” inputs are usually not of high quality and may not cope well with really strong line-level signals.
A very few machines have a switch or software control to change the mic input to proper line-level stereo. Look at your computer manual to find out what you have.
In the absence of a suitable line-level input you need to buy a USB interface that gives you a line-level input, then connect the interface to an empty USB port on the computer. Here are some USB interfaces that are known to work with Audacity.

Trying to record from a mixer, I have 1 mic and 1 headphone port, I tried the mic and it was picking up the sound from the lin in, I tried with my voice and it picked up nothing but it did pick up sound from the mixer, how-ever it was very tinny and sound like it was recorded through a mic, are there some settings I’m missing? the line out is connected to the record ports on the mixer.
The line out of what is connected to the record ports on the mixer? Or do you mean record out of the mixer connected to the computer input?
What are you trying to record into the mixer? Are you recording singing over a backing track in Audacity? What is the make and model number of the mixer?
As I said, if you only have a mic port on the computer, forget it if you are interested in highest quality recording. You need a USB interface with a line in.

As Gale said, you need a line input which means you need to get a USB interface with a line-input.*
Regular soundcards in desktop & tower computers have line-in, but most laptops do not.
***** Do not buy a “USB Soundcard”. These are like laptops with only mic-in and headphone-out.
