Hi Audacity Community!
I used Audacity about 15 years ago and it looks like it has grown and become a much better platform! Great work. I am currently using Studio One, but they have constant upgrades and costs. I was curious if anyone on here has experiences with both and if they maybe have some insights into relative strengths and weaknesses. This was the first DAW I used to record and would happily come home if it has many of the same features as Studio One.
I haven’t used Studio One.
As you probably know Audacity is FREE (and open source) so you can try it or keep it alongside Studio One, etc.
Studio One is a full multitracking DAW and Audacity is a “simple audio editor”.
Depending on what you’re doing Audacity may be more convenient but if you are multitrack recording and mixing or if you are using MIDI you are better off with a full DAW. Also, most commercial plug-ins don’t officially support Audacity, although sometimes they work. It also doesn’t support ASIO drivers.
A lot of people use Audacity for making audiobooks and it’s GREAT for that. I mostly use it for editing existing music tracks, And I digitized quite a few vinyl records but that project is done unless someone wants me to digitize a record for them.
Studio One 6 is my favorite DAW except that it has no Smooth Scrolling (fixed playhead). But for mixing en VST’s it’s a nice piece of sw.
Studio One 7 has a lot of bugs on my DAW. I don’t use it anymore.
Audacity is basically ‘pure’ for the straight forward AV productions, and has lots of useful options. And it is for free!
Safe ride!
@DurangoTix, what are you using Studio One for? I know a lot of voiceover people who love it, but I have done a lot of voiceover stuff with Audacity and find it to be suitable for what I need.
