Audacity Version Compatibility with MacOS Versions

I am running MacOS version Sonoma 14.7. I was going to upgrade to Sequoia 15.0.1 but the “Working Not Working” List indicates that Audacity does not work with this version. Also, I tried to upgrade my version of Audacity (currently on 3.3.3) but when I try check for updates, Audacity crashes. Any insights from any one on this? Thanks in advance

MJ

I am running Audacity 3.6.4 on macOS 15.0.1 on an M1 machine and an Intel machine.

Go here to get the update. Scroll down for the installer version for your hardware.

There must something be wrong with your macOS, not with Audacity.

Old Audacity versions (any 3.x and also most 2.x) work perfectly on macOS until Sonoma (don’t know about Sequoia). And Audacity 3.5 is installed here on a Mac with High Sierra (10.13.6) also working as expected.

I am running Sonoma 14.7.

I previously had Audacity 3.6.4 running on macOS 14.7 with no problem.

I cant’ get to 3.6.4 (I am on 3.6.3) and it crashes when I try to do the update.

If it “crashes”, please describe what happened. Is there any error message? If so, what does it say?

If the update function in Audacity does not work correctly, you can still download the new version and install “manually”.

However, I strongly believe that your macOS installation ist somehow damaged. You could try to re-install macOS from the recovery partition over the existing installation. This should repair any existing damages. Although your data etc. should not be altered by that re-installation, you should still make a backup before, just to be on the safe side.

Do not use the “Check for updates” function in Audacity if it crashes.

Do a full un-install of Audacity:

  1. Drag the Audacity application to the trash.

  2. In the Finder, click on Go (menu) > Go to folder.

  3. In the dialog, type “~/Library/Application Support/”

  4. In the Application Support folder, drag the “audacity” folder to the trash.

Download Audacity 3.6.4 from here.
Scroll down to get the DMG for your hardware (Apple Silicon or Intel).
Do not use the Muse installer.
Once you have downloaded and opened the DMG, drag the Audacity application to the Applications folder.
