Hello, just a quick question because audacity has not been working for me since 2.0.6 and for the 2.1.0 version which I’m on now.
I’m running Windows 7 Service Pack 1, I installed Audacity 2.1.0 from the .exe from audacityteam.org.
Further maybe useful info:
4 GB RAM
AMD FX-6300
Onbuilt sound card on Asus M5A97 (although I am using a USB headset so this is probably redundant)
What actually happens:
First thing I notice is that Audacity requires admin to run (note this is including yesterday when I was still on audacity 2.0.6).
I go to File > Import > Audio which brings up the file selection window as expected, and after a few seconds hangs/freezes/crashes. During this time I am unable to close the window or anything, I’ve had to manually end the process in task manager.
Task manager also reports that CPU usage has increased from 5-10% to about 38-43% (on 2.0.6 it would go up to 100%).
Anybody have any idea at all what on earth is happening?

What file format? Try a different file, maybe a WAV or MP3.
If you’ve installed the FFMPEG import/export library you may need to re-download and re-install it. (I had to do that recently after upgrading Audacity.)

That might be an installation option, but I’m not sure. Someone else can give a better answer.
Reinstall 2.1.0 from http://audacityteam.org/download/windows. Ensure you check (tick) the box half way through the installer that says “Reset Preferences”. Then the File > Import > Audio window should open in the directory you installed Audacity to, and your Audacity temp directory should be C:\Users<your user name>\AppData\Local\Temp\audacity_temp.
It may be that your computer permissions are messed up and you no longer have permission to read the folder that the import window last imported from. Possibly the temp directory has the same problem and/or the folders are not responding, perhaps because you have them set to a network drive.
It is also possible that a recently installed anti-malware app is interfering with Audacity, examining what it does and causing it to hang. If that is the case, add Audacity to its exclusions list.
Just tried reinstalling Audacity 2.1.0, the same thing happens, as in I need admin and the import window hangs, as well as increasing CPU Usage before I shut the process down before it reaches 100% usage.
However, I also downloaded the zip version, which doesn’t seem to suffer the same problems, at first. If there are any I’ll keep this updated.
So have you checked on anti-malware apps? They may not monitor EXE’s that are extracted from ZIP files.
Did you download the EXE installer or did you try to run it from the web browser? Some security apps don’t like running installers from temporary space.
