Audacity Recording Too Low

I’m using 3.7.1. Audacity is recording at too low a volume.

I’ve been on with ChatGPT & Copilot for hours trying to fix it.
When I record with sound recorder or Camtasia the volume is fine, same mic, same speakers, same everything. Audacity has been uninstalled & reinstalled, I’m exhausted.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks

How low is “too low”?

Are you recording your laptop’s built-in mic or something else?

If you are using an audio interface there a likely explanation…

I can hear it but not really loudly enough when the volume is up all the way. When I stop it and click on a random video that’s open in another window, it blows my ears off. I have a HyperX microphone but the main thing is, everything works fine in Windows Sound Recorder and Camptasia, so I’m thinking that rules out system settings, hardware, etc. I’ve go through all kinds of Audacity settings umpteem times with the AI tools and so on. I even uninstalled Audacity and reinstalled it from scratch so theoretically, it’s straight out of the box and it only records at low volume. When I uninstalled it said there were some items that it couldn’t uninstall but that could be uninstalled by hand, but it didn’t say which ones. Is it possible that something is hanging around? BTW, I deleted audacity.cfg to try to get back to default settings, which I may have done, but it wasn’t a fix

That’s a USB microphone?

Strange problem… Audacity should be getting the same digital audio stream (from the drivers and Windows) as the other applications.

You may not be able to adjust Audacity’s recording level at all with USB, but in case you don’t know this - The recording level slider is 'hidden" under the recording meters (and the playback volume slider behind the playback meters).

A couple of possible work-arounds - If the quality is OK and it’s just the volume you can run the Amplify effect after recording.

Or you can record with one of your other applications and then open the file in Audacity for editing.

I have an update. It’s not just a matter of recording, if I open any .wav file in Audacity, it won’t play at the right volume, even though it’s fine in other sound programs. Also, I uninstalled and reinstalled Audacity so it should be in its out of the box state with all default settings. In addition, when a record a file in audacity, it will only play at very low volume. When I export it to .wav it plays fine in other programs. But when I import it back in again, same problem
