Audacity is free software. You do not need to use any of the paid services.
If you are trying to download the current version from the website: below the yellow download button there is a link to “download without MuseHub”. And 3.5.0 can be downloaded from the GitHub page in various flavours, see below. I really do not see your problem…

Make sure you’re getting it from the right place:
To fight this, some programs now display a message in the installer program saying that it is free, a link to the source, and sometimes a button to report people who are selling it. It is harder for scammers to modify the installer program with their own message.
Audacity should do this in their installer program. Or… maybe it’s already there. I have not installed Audacity in quite a while.
Thanks guys and dolls- The problem seems to be a blown-out Presonus ext. sound card and a out-of -box bad-mother-board Dell XP. Getting the whole thing to work for 2 channel inputs has been a nightmare. Glad the Dell is under warranty. Now shifting to 100% Mac.
