Audacity kills all sound on my machine

Linux Mint 22.2 Cinnamon version 6.4.8

Audacity version 3.7.6 (AppImage)

Every time I open Audacity all sound on my machine dies. I can see the levels indicating that Audacity ‘thinks’ it’s pushing out sound but there’s nothing. All other apps / programs also seem to think they’re pushing out sound but they are also silent.

I can switch from my sound card to HDMI and get sound from my monitor speakers but those monitor speakers always sound awful. I’ve had this with earlier versions of Audacity too. The only way I seem to get sound back is to restart and make sure I don’t open Audacity.

I’ve tried different playback devices to no avail. I only seem to have the ALSA host option. I’ve goofed around in my sound settings and Pulse but still no luck.

Interestingly, I’ve noticed that if I’m playing audio on a media player while I open Audacity, I get to keep the audio. Weird behaviour.
