Using version 3.7.8 on a 64 bit device. I downloaded the zip file onto a NTFS usb drive. I recorded and edited audio the other day just fine, and I went ahead and saved the audio on the same usb (file → save project → save project as…). I’m back to editing it today, I selected a bit of audio to delete as I’ve been doing, but then the entire program freezes and I have to go down to my taskbar to close the window, rather than going to the upper right corner as usual. I reopened audacity, it recovered the file, but it still wouldn’t work. I restarted my computer and it still freezes. I tried resetting audacity (tools → reset configuration), but it kind of fixed it? It makes the edit, but only after a long pause. Its kind of weird, I’m still trying to figure out whats going on as I type this. Either or, audacity edits are usually very quick and don’t result in any lag, of course. I’m new to the program and just don’t know what to do :(((
When Audacity takes a long time to do something it is indicative of a bad SqlLight database record in the project. The best way to deal with it is to export the audio to a lossless format, then import that into a new project.
Audacity doesn’t like working from a slow USB stick. Try transferring the project to your main hard drive.
If the problems persist then do what Wrecks0 suggests.
This was this fix! Thank you :3!
…!!! But!!! I saved it on a usb for a reason!!! Now my disk is full and I’m unable to do anything!!! Why must .aup3 files be so huge :(((?! I’ve already deleted all I could!!! What can I do?
Because the .aup3 files contain all actions you did, to allow undoing.
.aup3 files are not sound files. If you are finished editing, export them as a sound file (.mp3, .wav, .aiff, or whatever). .mp3 are usually smaller, but .mp3 is a compressed format while others are without compression / loss.
once you export your audio to mp3 or wav youre basically done with the .aup3 file, so you can delete it and get all that space back. lots of people hang onto the project file “just in case” but if youve got the final audio exported youre safe to toss it
