Audacity is unusually quiet when I try to scream into the mike

Talking is fine, but for some reason, when I scream into the mike, it cuts out. Is this a bug? Or did I screw up the settings?

Make sure Windows “enhancements” are turned OFF.

You hit one of the tests you can do to make sure nothing in the computer is trying to “help you” with your production. Another is hum or whistle a constant tone. If the tone survives for one or two seconds and then fades out, you are experiencing auto noise reduction.

Do you use Skype, Zoom, Meetings or other communication service? Those are famous for processing your voice and you don’t have anything to say about it. Restart the machine and make sure Zoom doesn’t start by itself in the background.

Two Zoom meetings ago, I found a tiny Zoom icon in my menu bar. I wasn’t in a meeting, hadn’t been for a day, and I thought I closed everything down. Silly me.

Turned off enhancements for the default speaker, but the audio still sounds like crap.

I think that I figured it out, kind of. Audacity doesn’t seem to start recording until the 10 second mark. It seems to be another problem entirely, I think.

Actually, here’s a audio clip. It’s supposed to go “wahahaha”, but I only get a “ha”.

Then talk through, and post this Test Clip.

Do Not apply any corrections, and do export it as WAV (Microsoft).

I’m getting closer and closer to blanket recommending either stand-alone sound recorders or recording on your phone.

I recorded that using Lossless Voice Memo on my old iPhone SE.

I cut it to length, applied Audiobook Mastering, and very gentle noise reduction.

It passes audiobook submission standards and sounds exactly like me.

It is said that not that many people want to read for audiobooks any more. That may be, but if you can pass audiobook submission standards, you can submit, and use the work, almost anywhere else.
