I’m getting the impression Audacity is not really Mac friendly. My problem is I can’t get the microphone to open. I’m using Scarlett solo interface into USB on a Mac Desktop running Monterey 12.6.6. No matter what…no luck…won’t work. Should I give up and go back to Audible?
Make sure you have microphone permissions: Control access to the microphone on Mac - Apple Support
Start up Audacity AFTER you plugin your USB interface. Otherwise do Transport > Rescan Audio Devices. Then Audio Setup.
There is one common if a little unusual cause of connection failure. Order matters. Plug the microphone/interface in first, or plug the microphone in and restart Audacity.
You can also Transport > Rescan, but that’s harder to remember.
Does the Mac still have Apple (upper left) > System Preferences > Sound? That’s one place you can inspect in the middle to see where the connection is being lost.
We fall into the trap of automatically assuming your sound hardware is working. It may not be.

I’ve tested recording over USB using a Behringer UCA222 and it works fine with 3.3.3 over Sonoma. There are some differences with the Windows version and 3.3.3 seems buggier with Mac than Win, but other than and minor items such as menu layout the functionality is identical for my fairly basic purposes at least.
If Transport > Rescan does not help, I suggest posting a more detailed description, such as what you’re clicking on when you say the microphone won’t “open”. IME if the USB is recognized as an input device, you should be able to press record and receive audio.
