Audacity does not find the correct device [SOLVED]

I am using Arch Linux with kernel version 4.18.
Audacity version 2.3.0.
I have installed it from Arch Linux repositories.

However, if I run

I get:

The first device reported by aplay seems to be missing in Audacity’s report. I believe it is the correct device since:

  1. Audacity neither plays nor records with the devices it found
  2. PulseAudio (via pavucontrol) names the device it uses as “analog”

How do I proceed?

The recommended version for Linux is Audacity 2.2.2.
The 2.3.0 release is for Windows / Mac only. (2.3.0 on Linux is classed as “experimental” and has some serious bugs).

No Pulse Audio!
Why is Pulse Audio apparently not running? Did you suspend Pulse when launching Audacity?

Alright. Installing 2.2.2 seems to have fixed it for recording. However, Pulse Audio is running. If I run

pulseaudio

I get:

E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.

What does the Audio Device Info look like with Audacity 2.2.2?

Btw, Pulse Audio GUI calls the device “analog stereo duplex”

That device info looks strange. There is still no mention of Pulse, but Audacity is reporting the name of some audio “settings” as if they were “devices”. Namely:

Device ID: 8
Device name: samplerate

Device ID: 9
Device name: speexrate

Device ID: 10
Device name: speex

Device ID: 11
Device name: upmix

Device ID: 12

According to that, something is playing through “Built-in Audio Analog Stereo” (Sink #0)
What is playing?

Do you have pavucontrol installed?

Yes I have pavucontrol installed.

Try shutting down Timidity and VLC and any other audio applications, then restart Audacity and see if you can record from you laptop’s mic and play back through the laptop speakers.

Yes. Shutting Down TIMIDITY worked. Thank you!
