Audacity crashes when opening under Apple OS Sonoma

I’m in the middle of recording an audiobook. Went to playback a segment and got no sound through headphones. System is OK, monitor shows the recording is OK, but NO sound when I try to play back. Can’t fund anything I might have clicked accidentally.

I have a 2020 iMac, and I recently updated the OS to Sonoma, the latest. Whenever I open Audacity (2 or 3 times a day), it crashes. Then, when I re-open, it’s fine and asks me if I want to save the new file that was created when it crashed. From there on all is well, but this gets annoying. Any help would be welcome.

The developers are aware of an issue which causes Audacity to crash and have fixed the bug in the next release (3.4) of Audacity. (Which is not yet available).

I seems that the crash occurs during update checking which will normally occur the first time you run the program each day. Until 3.4 is released, you can avoid this by disabling the update check in Preferences > Applications.

Note Audacity 3.4 is on the way, possibly within 2-3 weeks.

Do Transport > Rescan Audio Devices, then repeat Audio Setup. Also, check that you have not bumped the level controls on the Meter Toolbars

Thanks, that makes sense, because manually selecting Help->Check for Updates also causes Audacity to crash!

I have not yet upgraded to MacOS 14 (Sonoma) because I was concerned about Audacity compatibility (particularly while in the middle of an audiobook project myself). I was glad to see this thread with useful information, which validated my concern.

I just got a notification in Audacity that Audacity 3.4 has been released. However, I didn’t see anything in the GitHub release notes that indicated it had fixed the problem of Audacity crashing under MacOS 14. On Audacity’s Changelog, it says, “Audacity 3.4 is tested on macOS 12 & 13, and should support macOS 14.” Umm…“should support”?

Do you (or does anyone) know whether Audacity 3.4 actually does resolve the issue with Audacity crashing under MacOS 14?

Thanks
~ Rob

we verified that this crash bug is no longer present, but we did not do a full test on everything in macos 14.
