Audacity crashes after some minutes - Exception code 0xc0000005

Hi

Yesterday I installed Audacity and at the end of the installation I got an error. I tried to send the error but it wouldn’t let me. However, I saw that I could use the program. Today when trying to make a long recording, after about 10 minutes the program crashed and a very similar error appeared that I cannot send either.

I face similar problem
The program terminates abruptly at random interval by showing “Exception code 0xc0000005” error Window of while recording. This is a forced break, necessitating a restart of Audacity program for continuing the recording.

I could not find a solution to overcome this problem in the web or Forum. I will be grateful for any guidance on / solution to this problem. Screenshot is attached.

My System is Windows 10, 22H2, 64-bit. Installed Audacity program is 3.6.1 CMake Release Build (debug level 1) 64-bit.

A reply in the Forum suggested that, uninstalling the existing program, deleting the configuration file of Audacity manually and reinstalling the program. These steps did not help me.

Someone reported stated that he faced similar problem after connecting and disconnecting Bluetooth Headphones before start of the program. it is an information to me that Bluetooth Headphones work with Audacity. Thanks for the information.

I noticed similar problem with earlier versions also. But that was in the case when I closed the program through Task Manager to clear the hung-up situation when I typed Track Title in non-English language (Hindi). I had overcome this problem by typing the Title in a separate text editor, and then copy & paste in the Metadata Editor window instead of typing directly in Metadata Editor window in Hindi.

The Error display window does neither “Send” feedback; nor maximize the window.

I have a similar issue.

When recording i get this 0xc0000005 crash, sometimes after an hour and sometimes even in much shorter time.

Sending the crash report doesn’t work for me either.

Thanks @Ashok.P and @Tsam-Boss for reporting that I’m not the only one with the problem. I was going to write about what worked for me two weeks ago. My first attempt at a solution was to install the 32-bit version but that didn’t work either, the error persisted. Afterwards I downloaded the portable 32-bit version and I haven’t had any problems so far!

Thank you very much for sharing the solution to this problem. I followed your instructions and am successful at recording a 2-hour audio today evening without any interruption. I downloaded the zipped 32-bit 3.6.1 Audacity program and installed.

I recorded the same audio through a 64-bit program as well as a 32-bit program simultaneously over the same network. Error message appeared at 47th minute of the recording through 64-bit program.

Interesting! Thank you very much for confirming that some of what I said worked for you! And although that is not the solution to the problem it seems it will allow us to use Audacity It’s a shame that no one has given us any support but at least we managed to use Audacity.

Hello again, I tried the portable version (not sure if it was a 32 or 64 bit) and i still had the same issue. I found another solution for me, which worksout fine even with the “normal” Audacity version installed. I just minimize the Audacity window and no errors occur, even after 6 hours of recording. Assumably, the problem is the waveform that is being freshly generated while recording, causes some graphical-process-conflict i would call it. Maybe this problem is cpu related, with integrated graphics. If anyone is interested on investigating it further, my cpu is a AMD Ryzen 5700G.

Mine is: AMD Ryzen 5 3400G with Radeon Vega Graphics 3.70 GHz.

I find it quite bad that there are even problems in your case with the portable version I have used it like this with the portable version of 32 bit recording between one and two hours for a couple of weeks now, and luckily I have had no problems so far.

Have been using several Audacity versions through the years and now last few weeks - in my recollection after updating to 3.6.0 - hav experiencing same error.
While recording Audacity crashes.
Updated to 3.6.1 on 2 windows laptops.
One x64 and the other x32 version.
First test run for about 2 hours - no problem.
Second test run - one crashes after 6 minutes.
The other after 1 hour 10 minutes.

Up the forum a bit one poster got out of trouble by Not Upgrading Audacity. They removed all the old files, preferences, settings, etc and installed Audacity fresh. Not just Tools > Reset Preferences. All of the files associated with Audacity.

This process is called out in the manual.

In the case of Macs, drag the Application Support > audacity folder (the whole thing) to the trash.

There’s a difference of opinion whether you need to restart after that, but I would.

Then download the Audacity installer and apply it.

This is assuming you’re not doing anything else wrong. Audacity hates outside drives, particularly the newer updates. All production has to be done on your System Drive C:\ .

You can move files around to and from external drives, cloud drives, network drives, etc., however much you want, you just can’t let Audacity see you doing it.

The closest Audacity gets to Cloud Storage is saving Audacity Projects to audio.com.

And nobody wrote you can’t have two problems.

Thanks Kozikowski for quick reply. Have unistalled Audacity on both laptops, like you suggested.
Did soms disc cleaning and ran CCleaner. Made sure all audicity files were gone.
Restarted both laptops and installed Audacity.
On the 64 bit laptop version 3.6.1
On the 32 bit laptop version 3.4.2
Version 3.6.1 crashed after about 1,5 hour. First recording run. The recordings there after (about 4) no problem.
Version 3.4.2 several recordings and so far no crashes.
Tomorrow more testing.

0xc0000005 is a Windows code for a memory leak. This could be a code problem OR the memory DIMS installed on the machine are incompatible with the mainboard. This most often happens with DDR5 and high memory clock settings.

Dear Kozikowski,
Have tested both laptops/version last week.
First test run showed an error with 3.6.1, other version no problem, but also several more test recordings with 3.6.1 no problem.
Until today - have started a recording with both laptops.
Version 3.4.2 no problem.
Version 3.6.1 error after 31 minutes of recording.
Note - the laptop with 3.4.2 is the one we usually use as our recording device.

Tried to send the report - but as usual “failed to sent report”.
I made a screen short, but this only shows little part of the report.
In my opinion it is not he hardware which causes a failure, but the 3.6.1 version.

Again failure after about an hour or so.
I managed to save the error report to a text file.

0xc0000005 is a Windows error code meaning Access Violation (a memory leak generally won’t cause errors unless it causes your machine to go out of memory). It’s almost always a code problem. It can be caused by bad memory, but that’s not likely since I’ve seen this error code show up a lot in this forum recently.
