Audacity crash if applied twice a VST Guitar Rig Plugin

Hi there!

Since I’m still not comfortable with more professional programs (I didn’t practice almost at all xD) I’m still using Audacity to record my audio.
I make my records via the emulated output of my guitar amp (Blackstar HT-50). After I’ve finished, I start working on my records with Guitar Rig Pro in order to have better and more custom sounds, then I save my presets, close Guitar Rig and open Audacity (which has already the 32 bit guitar rig vst plugin correctely installed).

I start applying the “VST effect” on my records, but when I apply it two times (on different tracks, different records exc), Audacity crashes. This is really frustrating since, in order to avoid this, I have to close and re-open Audacity every time I apply a VST effect.

PC Specs:
CPU: Athlon 64 x2 6000+
MOBO: Asus M3A
RAM: 4gb ddr2 800 (Kingston)
Audio card: Integrated realtek D:
OS: Windows Vista SP2 x64

Thank you in advance!

Thanks for all the detail, but you missed out one important one: the exact three-section version of Audacity (“Help menu > About Audacity”)

I forgot it  it’s the latest stable version: 2.0.6!

There’s a lot of improvements being made to VST support and a new version of Audacity (2.1.0) is due to be released very soon. If you can cope with the issue for now, I would suggest that you give Audacity 2.1 a go when it is released. We will be announcing the release here on the forum, but if you would like to be notified by email you can subscribe to the release announcements at the bottom of the Audacity home page: http://audacityteam.org/

Thanks, but there is not enough information to attempt to reproduce this. There is no known general problem as you describe.

What version of Guitar Rig Pro - 5, or earlier? Demo version or have you paid for it? The demo version of Guitar Rig Pro 5 has to be restarted every 30 minutes, which could be relevant.

How long are the tracks? Are they mono or stereo? Are the tracks imported files, if so WAV, MP3? Do you have both tracks present when the crash happens? Or have you deleted the previous track or closed the previous project?

In other words, steps are needed 1, 2, 3 ,4 …

The upcoming 2.1.0 release of Audacity has implemented real-time preview for VST effects so I suggest you try the same steps in the 2.1.0rc2 pre-release at the top of http://gaclrecords.org.uk/win-nightly/. If the crash occurs there then when we have the necessary information we can look at it.

Thank you for the support, I’ll be paying attention to the new release, then!

About Guitar Rig, it is the complete version and there is no need to restart

I’ve this problem with any track, irrespective of its lenght; I usually apply the effects on splitted (leftright channel) stereo tracks.
The tracks are recorded directly inside Audacity and not imported

I remember time ago (before my latest format) I hadn’t this problem; after some time it started but again, after some time (don’t know how), it disappeared.
Some time after that I had to format and I’m facing this problem again!

Hope this is more useful!

Or you can test the preview release now, in case you forget. There will be an RC3 preview release hopefully soon, to fix a problem with slow exports.

But which version? 3, 4, 5? It may make a difference.

So does the plugin always crash on the right channel, or will it crash on the left channel if you apply it first to the right?

If you duplicate a stereo track and apply the effect to the original track, does it crash when applied to the duplicate?

Does the plugin have separate mono and stereo versions?

Have you discussed this issue with Native Instruments? Does the plugin crash after you format the drive in hosts other than Audacity?
