Audacity cannot play saved .aup after crash

Hello,

I’m using the latest version of Audacity on a Mac.

Audacity crashes OFTEN on a Mac. After a recent crash, I force quit Audacity and attempted to reopen a saved .aup. No changes were made to the .aup or the _data folder.

After opening the .aup, all the tracks are silent: the waveforms are gone, and I only see straight lines in their place.

Again, this was a saved .aup file that opened and worked fine before the crash.

Any ideas? I’ve spent a lot of time searching the forums/internet and can’t find a solution to this.

Please give us all three numbers from Audacity > About Audacity… as requested in the pink panel at the top of the page. If it says 2.0.4, that version crashed (sooner or later) when you imported files.

The current version is 2.0.5 from Audacity ® | Download for Mac OS .

That sounds like a freeze rather than a crash.

Was this AUP open when you force quit Audacity?

When the AUP reopened silenced, there would probably be error messages. What did the messages say exactly? Can you open Help > Show Log… then drag down from the top to the bottom of the log, COMMAND + C to copy, then paste here.

If the project contained imported WAV or AIFF files, have you moved or renamed those files?

Yes, the AUP was open when I force quit.

The error that comes up tells of 120 orphan files that are unused by this project. No other errors.

No files were moved or renamed.

2.0.5 should not be crashing often. Do you mean it is hanging often? What are you trying to do when Audacity hangs or crashes?

Please make sure you followed Installation: Do NOT run Audacity from the DMG!!!! and that you are not running Audacity from the DMG.

Did you see an Automatic Crash Recovery dialogue when you restarted Audacity? That dialogue would have been for any unsaved changes. If you saw that dialogue, was the waveform silenced then? If the waveform was silenced and you saved it as a project then that project is silence now.

Otherwise, open the AUP file in TextEdit. Drag some of the AU files listed in the AUP file from their “d” folder in in “/Volumes/Student File Share/aguilar130/Ryan Smith Mixed Emotions/MixedEmotions_data/e00/” into Audacity. Are the files silenced?

If those files have usable audio please attach the AUP file. See How to attach files to forum posts .

Note that if that Student File Share is a network drive you should not set your Audacity temporary directory there - it will be too slow.

Audacity doesn’t understand network delays. If its drives don’t arrive perfectly and quickly it will assume they’re broken.
