Audacity auto changing volume

I record a podcast with a few other people (over Google Meetup, and Teams) and Audacity keeps lowering my volume automatically to 8%. I’m using a Mac, and I don’t think I’ve ever had this issue before. The only change I’ve made is that I stopped using Skype.

Any ideas? I put the volume up to 50%, and it stays for a while, and then slowly drops back to 8%. I’m using a Yeti mic.

What version of macOS?
What version of Audacity?
When does the volume change?
How do you determine the “8%” value (I do not remember seing an indication in %, but I may be wrong)?

I’m a Windows guy…

It’s NOT Audacity. It might be the Meetup & Teams applications or a macOS setting.

I did a quick search and the similar problem/solution I found was a Skype setting.

…Windows has audio “enhancements” that include automatic volume control and noise reduction and they can mess-up the sound in all kinds of weird ways. It’s one of the most common problems we see on the forum. The Mac might have something similar.

Sequoia 15.5
Audacity 3.73
The volume changes after I am talking, and slides down until it hits 8%.
If you hover over the volume slider, it tells you the percentage.

By the way, which volume setting changes? Recording or playback?

I tried to re-create the behaviour - without success. Not with “sound-activated recording”, and not with normal recording. Nothing changed automagically. However, I am using Sonoma (14.7.6) and Audacity 3.6.4.

There might be some Audacity settings which causes the problem. What you can try:
In the Finder, while Audacity is not open, use the Menu “Go To → Go to Folder…” and enter there (or copy the line below):
~/Library/Application Support/
There is a folder called “audacity”, therein are all the Audacity settings you created. Just drag the whole folder “audacity” to your desktop (or anywhere else). Audacity then will start “from scratch” without specific settings. Check, if the behaviour changed or not. If the problem continues, it has nothing to do with your Audacity settings. It then may be an issue of Teams or Google Meetup.

@DVDdoug - Although Apple thinks to know better what the users want than the users themselves, there are no such “enhancements” in macOS so far…
