AUDACITY 4 – Horrible / Abysmal Keyboard Shortcuts

Please restore the Alt key shortcuts from version 3.x. Currently in Audacity 4.0.2, pressing Alt+E highlights “Edit” on the menu bar with an underline under the “E”, but it also underlines the “E” in “Effect”.

This has to be a deliberate design flaw by sadistic developers aiming to make Audacity 4 100% dependent on mouse movements. In version 3.x, Alt+E opens the Edit menu (underline on the ‘E’), while Alt+C opens the Effect menu (underline on the ‘c’). Version 3.0 had ZERO shortcut key conflicts.

Please, make an effort to clean up this disaster purposefully engineered just to turn an editor’s life into a living hell. At the very least, pull yourselves together and restore the shortcut keys to match Audacity 3.x—because those actually worked! Design an underlined access key system that doesn’t conflict by slapping an underline on the exact same letter in two different words.

Looks like you got the developers’ attention.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to report this, and sorry it’s getting in the way of your work.

We’ve identified the issues with the menu bar and shortcuts in Audacity.

Before we can fix them properly, we first need to rework how shortcuts work under the hood (tracked here, planned for 4.1), so these fixes will come after that. I can’t give you a date yet, but your report is part of what we’ll look at.

Thanks!
