Audacity 4.0 won't launch

I just installed Audacity 4.0 but it won’t launch on my pc. I have tried double clicking it, right click and open, open as an administrator, reinstalled, restarted pc, nothing seem to happen. Audacity 3.7 works fine although it had 2 plugins disabled upon launch.

I use a Lenovo t14 gen 5, Windows 11.

I had a similar problem. A simple shutdown and start rather than a mere restart did the trick. I hope it turns out to be this simple for you.

OK now I’m tearing my hear out! After writing the above I has a reason to open v3.7 which was still on my machine. After that V4 stopped working again! I’m going to start a new thread about that.

A shut shutdown and start did not work for me. I got to realize that my bluetooth earphones for some reason is the cause. Audacity 4.0 works when I unplug my earphones and does not work when it is connected. Version 3.7 works fine with or without the bluetooth earphones connected.

So, I guess this is a bug the developers need to look into.

Have you tried checking the crash logs or disabling the plugins that were disabled in 3.7? It might be a plugin or compatibility issue with the new version.

Apparently connecting my bluetooth earphones is the cause of the problem. I will find out how to check the crash logs and disable plugins.

Only co-incidence made me think my problem yesterday was fixed by a stutdown/start. Sorry to have wasted anybody’s time. Today’s coincidence was to think that running V3 had crashed V4 again and nearly put up a post about it. After spending the last hour deleting, reloading, removing every trace of Audacity from the User data, trying to make sense of the errors in the log files, shutting down and restarting more times than I can remember, all with no success I switched off my bluetooth headphones and it works fine. Switch them back on while V4 is open and it closes within seconds. Thanks for finding this!
In fact this probably not a problem for most users since the delay in bluetooth makes it useless for many applications, but it’s a bug that really needs to be fixed.

Can confirm. Same issue. Wouldn’t start with my BT headphones on… Turned them off and started up Audacity 4. Tried turning back on my BT headphones and Audacity 4 immediately crashed.

Exact same problem here - Audacity will crash if bluetooth heaphones are on when starting Audacity or turning the headphones on when Audacity is running. Every single tme!

As a 40+ year dinosaur techie nerd at every level of IT from programming, systems, database design, and IT management I learned long ago to never download the latest update/revision when it first shows up. There are always unresolved bugs and glitches, some more serious than others. While everyone wants to see the latest and greatest, the risk is that a serious problem will crash your system, erase your data, damage your data, etc. Better to wait several weeks to let other people experience that and the fixes get done. For me, at some point the continous “upgrades” and “enhancements” eventally take away utility, make the programs harder to use, and sometimes favorite functions disappear. So most of the programs I use frequently I revert back to the last good version that gave me no issues and was comfortable to use.

Audacity is my DAW. I have all the top DAWs but I started recording music with Audacity, had four songs hit the country music charts, and continued. Over the past few years Audacity has seriously improved in the musical area. If you like country music check out Big Jim Davis | ReverbNation

I definitely have all of thee problems. With the change from 3.7 to 4.0, the incidents of no-record have increased on all my machines ranging from Win 10 to Win 11 w/ the latest updates. In its great tradition, Audacity continues to be the most fickle of all my audio apps. Seemingly trivial reasons like having earphones plug in stall the .exe. Not enough beta testing, in my humble opinion.
