Audacity 3.7.5 on Windows 10 fails to record, period

Audacity 3.7.5 on Windows 10, attempted:
using WASAPI as host,

headphones (loopback) as input

headphones as output

rescan, no detected audio, error 9996

switch to MME, same input/output config, rescan, same result.

revert to previous config (WASAPI, same input/output, rescan. same result.

can somebody suggest other audio software that functions as intended?

this appears to be an audio software interface emulator with no other functionality.

MME doesn’t support loopback. It can only record what’s coming into the soundcard. BUT depending on your soundcard/drivers, you may have Stereo Mix or What-U-Hear which also capture/record soundcard output.

Most likely it’s a Windows setting or something in the hardware, but -

Ocenaudio is free.
GoldWave is $60USD for a lifetime license after a fully-functional free trial.

Actually, after some digging, found that the input was configured for surround sound rather than stereo.

After correcting that issue, it works fine.

Apologies offered.

P.S. Other products were investigated and found to be lacking, thanks for your work.

Thanks for sharing the solution. I’m making a note of that…

Was that a Windows setting or an Audacity setting? Recording or playback?

Found it in the speaker configuration.
