Audacity 3.6.1 stopped working for no apparent reason

Hello everyone,
I’ve been using Audacity 3.6.1 and yesterday it started to slow down considerably, for no evident reason. Today it has gotten worse and now the very first thing I’m trying to do (“join files”) keeps crashing it, and I cannot even close it without using the program manager.

Would appreciate any tips on what could be wrong with it.

Just to add - one thing I’m noticing consistently is that “joining clips” increases the size of the file dramatically, though it’s still too small to be this slow.
My pasting audio settings are at “selected audio only”.
