Audacity 2.3.0 won't launch

Hi everyone,
My problem us that Audacity icon bounces in Dock and then closes. Sometimes I get an error about blocking the temporal folder. If I click that I still want to run Audacity, it crashes. Deleting audacity.cfg doesn’t help.

I can run version 2.1.1 (sometimes I need to delete the “audacity.cfg” file. But I cannot get to open newer version for more than a year. In early 2018 I tried formating my mac but nothing changed. I’m now in 10.13.6 (the last version that my mac supports).

After the last release I tried changing permissions to some folders and now I get a message (in spanish) about an error when blocking the temporal folder. Sometimes I get this error in 2.1.1 (after I try opening 2.3.1) but it still opens.

If I try to open /Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity
The terminal says

/Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity ; exit;
/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.60.1/Common/ChunkCompression.cpp:49: Error: unsupported compressor 8
/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.60.1/Libraries/CompressData/CompressData.c:353: Error: Unknown compression scheme encountered for file '/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/Exceptions.plist'
/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.60.1/Common/ChunkCompression.cpp:49: Error: unsupported compressor 8
/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.60.1/Libraries/CompressData/CompressData.c:353: Error: Unknown compression scheme encountered for file '/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/AppExceptions.bundle/Exceptions.plist'

Then it stops, showing the window about blocking the temporal folder. If I click yes, the terminal adds the next text:

logout
Saving session...
...copying shared history...
...saving history...truncating history files...
...completed.

[Proceso completado]

I would like to return to the translation of the manual but one of the ToDo was to check consistency with the program translation…

Thanks!

The current version of Audacity is 2.3.0 (2.3.1 is due to be released later this month).
The current version is available via the Audacity website: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/mac/

I’d suggest that you trash all versions of Audacity that are currently on your machine, and get the “Audacity 2.3.0 .dmg” file from the download page.

After trashing the old versions, restart your computer, then install the new version.
Take care to follow the installations instructions exactly.

When starting the new version for the first time, pay close attention to what happens, so that if it still fails to launch you can tell us exactly what happens.

Hi Steve,

I trashed the folder ~/Library/Application Support/audacity/ and both audacity in Applications’ folder, and emptied trash bin.

Then powered off and on the mac, and copied Audacity to Applications folder as said in https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/installing_and_updating_audacity_on_mac_os_x.html

First got gate keeper verification, wich asked if I wanted to open this file downloaded from Internet. Pressed Yes, and it closed.
This created the folder ~/Library/Application Support/audacity/ with empty SessionData folder, and audacity.cfg with the following

PrefsVersion=1.1.1r1
[Version]
Major=2
Minor=3
Micro=0
[Directories]
TempDir=/Users/*******usernamemodified********/Library/Application Support/audacity/SessionData

When running /Applications/Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity in Terminal:

/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.60.1/Common/ChunkCompression.cpp:49: Error: unsupported compressor 8
/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.60.1/Libraries/CompressData/CompressData.c:353: Error: Unknown compression scheme encountered for file '/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/Exceptions.plist'
/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.60.1/Common/ChunkCompression.cpp:49: Error: unsupported compressor 8
/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/AppleFSCompression/AppleFSCompression-96.60.1/Libraries/CompressData/CompressData.c:353: Error: Unknown compression scheme encountered for file '/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library/AppExceptions.bundle/Exceptions.plist'
logout
Saving session...
...copying shared history...
...saving history...truncating history files...
...completed.
Deleting expired sessions...none found.

This didn’t generate a file in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ or in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/

I’m not able to reproduce the problem, but searching Google suggests that this may be the problem: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201341
Xquartz is available here: https://www.xquartz.org/

More info here: https://inkscape.org/learn/faq/#inkscape-fails-launch-os-x-108-and-later

Hi again,
I tried yesterday installing Xquartz and then running Audacity… it won’t open.
Today I restarted the PC and tried running Audacity (as yesterday I couldn’t restart it)… and the same happened.

I don’t need to run the latest Audacity for my personal needs, I give up and maybe will try again in a year. It could have helped me to have the last one for consistency inside the manual translation, but I will try a different aproach.

For the manual translation, it could have helped to mantain consistency… but I will try a workaround for that.

Thank you Steve.

I had this same problem with 2.3.3 right after I changed the Session data folder to an external ssd.

Nothing seemed to work until I edited the audacity.cfg file and moved the session data folder back to the internal hdd.

audacity.cfg was located in ~/Library/Application Support/audacity
TempDir was the only entry I changed.

Hope this helps some other fool, like me, who tries to move that folder

I am having very similar issue. When I start audacity with terminal I got

/Volumes/Data/non\ essential\ application\ /Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity ; exit;
HuangFamilyHeyMacs-iMac:~ Dad$ /Volumes/Data/non\ essential\ application\ /Audacity.app/Contents/MacOS/Audacity ; exit;
logout
Saving session...
...copying shared history...
...saving history...truncating history files...
...completed.
shlock: link(/Volumes/Data/Users/Dad/.bash_sessions/shlock1969, /Volumes/Data/Users/Dad/.bash_sessions/_expiration_lockfile): Operation not supported

This is the first time I install audacity so no old version issues, and I can’t never get audacity to launch. Any ideas?
