Another one can't get signals from Mics

I’ve seen posts like this in the forum before but nobody explains if they solved their problem. I can play back from Audacity no probs but when it comes to inputs, whether I select the internal mic of my Macbook Pro M1 or an external audio device, I can only record empty tracks and the VU meters don’t budge.
