Add a button sync export and import directories

I’m using Audacity 2.3.3 on Xubuntu 20.04

I like how Audacity remembers the last directory for exports which may be different from the import directory – even between sessions. However, there are many times when I want to make a minor edit (e.g., trim blank sections from the beginning and end of a song) and then overwrite the original file. Often this means that after locating and loading the file, to save it requires searching again for the same directory where the original file resides. It would be great if there were a button on the pop-up Export menus near the directory path which when clicked would automatically go to the same directory as the loaded file. For a one-off operation that’s not much savings, but when you do this frequently the time saved would really add up.

Here’s a Nyquist plug-in that will set the default Export location to the folder where the last imported audio file came from:
Export-To-Import-Path.ny (1012 Bytes)
Installation instructions:

The plug-in requires a recent version of Audacity (3.0.3 or 3.0.4 should both work).

When installed, the plug-in will appear in the “Tools” menu. Run the plug-in after importing the file and before exporting.
Optionally, you could also set a keyboard shortcut to run the plug-in (See:

Let me know how it goes.
