It’s been absolutely fine but now it seems to be getting most of the way through the file then disappearing, even on short files of a couple of minutes.
You know we’re going to start asking you System Questions, right?
Are you running out of room on your internal drives? Do you know how to check that?
Are you using external, network, internet, or cloud drives?
Do you use audio.com for storage (normally OK)? Is it running out of room?
Are you on Windows? Have you ever done a Clean Windows Shutdown? You can get software packages to interfere with each other. Ordinary Windows Shutdown or Restart may not help.
Carefully save your work.

Thank you for your attention.
I have had internal storage issues interfere with audacity but I have been careful to delete and empty recycle bin regularly. I found it was interfering mostly with the mastering program you provided me with last year and that is working fine this time. Also when it is internal storage I get notifications on that and I am not getting them this time.
I’m wondering if it is Dropbox limiting functionality as I am only on the free version and I know I am over the limit. Is Dropbox essential?
I’m not currently using audio.com for storage. How is that for storage? Can you store as an audacity file?
I will have a look at the Clean Windows Shutdown. No I havent done it before.
thanks again for your help
