Accidentally truncated live recording?

Hello,

I recently used Audacity to record a podcast episode featuring 5 different voices. For the bulk of the recording, there was a setting toggled unbeknownst to me that automatically removed all silences from the recording, including natural lapses in speech. I’m aware of the Truncate Silence “effect”, this removal of silence feels much more dramatic and unnatural.

First question with a predictable answer-- is there any way to restore the removed silence from the project file, considering the first time I clicked playback, the silences had already been removed?

Second question-- can anyone recommend any doctoring or procedure or tips on how to make audio with natural silences removed sound more natural apart from or more efficient than simply adding silences where it feels appropriate? Might be a lost cause but it’s proving a very difficult task.

Thank you,
