Accessing files on a separate data drive

I’ve been using Audacity (mainly v2) for several years but now have a problem with accessing files on a non-OS data drive.

My current PC is an HP HP Z240 SFF Workstation with an Intel Core i7-6700 8 core processor and 16.0 GB RAM. My current operating system is Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS on a SSD in a 112.5 GB partition with over 90GB unused

My data is on a separate SSD (not just a separate partition on the OS SSD) – a lesson learned in my early days using PC/Home computers which still seems to be valid.

Previously I was using Audacity 2 under Ubuntu 22.04 (on the same hardware) and could readily access the data SSD from within Audacity to load/save or Import/Export files as required.

Now, using Audacity 3, I can access the OS partition, but cannot find the data SSD e.g. by browsing. How do I access the data SSD?

This does not seem to relate to the OS version as I had the same problem previously but was able to use Audacity 2 which was then but is no longer) on another partition on my OS drive.

I would prefer not to have to revert to Audacity 2 (including downloading it).

I’m a Windows guy and Audacity not even seeing the drive sounds weird to me…

The system requirements say:

The “new” all-in-one-file AUP3 format requires won’t work on a FAT32 formatted drive.

You can temporarily move the file to and from a FAT32 drive but when you’re actively working on an Audacity project with the AUP3 database file open, it needs to be NTFS (or something newer).

…On Windows, I CAN export/import audio files (WAV, etc.) to/from a FAT32 thumb drive.

Many thanks for your suggestion. The Audacity program sits on the main OS SSD and runs happily. [As a temporary fix, I’ve installed a Folder to hold files as I’m working on them on the OS drive, but regard this as a bodge (maybe I’m old fashioned!)] As I’m mainly handling mp3 and wav files I generally do not set up formal Audacity Projects (AUPs).

“Properties” on my data drive indicate that it is an Ext4 drive. Does this help?
