3.6.1 crashes on export

I reported the crashing on Export with 3.6.0. That project was a single track Zoom session audio file recorded in March 2023. It was not stereo, and I hadn’t done any cut & paste. I reinstalled 3.5.1 and completed that project without further issue. Today, I updated to 3.6.1 and started a new project with a two-track Zoom audio file recorded this morning. Before commencing any work on it, I selected a small section at the beginning to test the export. Instant crash, and, as before, Audacity was unable to send the crash report, which is attached.

Just upgraded to v3.6.1. I have had the same today twice while splitting a band recording into individual tracks. Also unable to send the crash report. Was able to recover the Audacity Projects after restarting Audacity. This needs looking at - In all my years of using Audacity, this is the first time I have ever had a crash.

I uninstalled 3.6.1, reinstalled 3.5.1, then updated to 3.6.1 again. Started a new project with another Zoom single track recording from March 2023. Saved project, selected small section and tried to export. Crash & unable to send report. Attached.

When you shuffle in and out of different Audacity versions, you should clean out the old one with Tools > Reset Configuration right after installing. If you shuffle enough, even that may not work, but you should not just leave the environment of the last program.

I suspect the report system is completely overloaded. Just a couple of the recent updates is enough to generate billions of complaints.

Well, 3.6.1 was supposed to fix this crashes when exporting, but I have had the same issue reported here, and I had resetted my settings just once in my life, due to an issue with my laptop, not with the app. I consider Audacity a pretty stable and dependable one, and as of now, the previous environment always works when updating.

But don’t get me wrong, if a reset is needed, I’ll go ahead and do it. Can you please confirm that is a must do it for this one?

Thanks in advance.

Windows?

Fix the crashes from 3.6.0?

What was the last version that worked reliably and with good stability? I know you’re not supposed to need to keep up with stuff like that, but Audacity is a new world.

what the fuck audacity sue you honestly how can this happen don’t release anymore updates ever

I would recommend, strongly, that you do not leap immediately on The Latest Version.

In general an X.X.2 can be considered “settled down” and reasonbly stable. The last X. X. 2 was 3.4.2 and that’s the one I’m using. It’s also recommended that you haunt the forum after an update to see if there are any common problems and wide ranging damage.

Backing up to an earlier version is doable, but that can be an adventure, too. You can do a simple Tools > Reset Configuration, but if you updated far enough, that may not be enough. In the case of Macs, you can dig into the System Files and remove all the Audacity files and settings. That may also remove the Macros and Plugins, so I probably would not actually delete that yet. Just take it out of Mac System Files.

I posted a revised Audiobook Mastering, but it’s not a Macro yet and you still need to apply it the long way, by hand.

Hey Koz, thanks for answering.

I was using 3.5.1 and upgraded to 3.6.1 with the reported issues when exporting. I’m using 2 laptops with Windows 10 and 11, both with the same behaviour, and I don’t want to reset my prefs (I’ll try to avoid the inconvenience of spending time setting up the environmet that I have now, if you know what I mean).

I love Audacity and use it very much, so I’d already downgraded back to 3.5.1 and will stay there for now, it works well.

Moco

I take your point about the configuration reset. Although I did it after reading your suggestion, I may not do it again for the same reason moco gave. Had to spend too much valuable time getting my environment set up again. For my purposes, v3.5.1 is perfectly stable and does everything I need.

IAC, appreciate having your info.

Your advice to wait to upgrade doesn’t help much, especially when you get the notification that a new version is available when you open an older version. Maybe that notification could be pulled until the issue is resolved. Meanwhile, I have a file that has hours of work but can’t be exported, and the old versions won’t open it. I’m on Mac, Ventura 13.6.8. So for the time being, I will go back to an older version for other files, and wait for 3.6.2 to come out.
