I’ve been editing an existing project without issue. I also have a pile of other recordings I need to upload. I checked online and it said I can record in one project while working in another. So I just opened a second project for upload, but now it won’t let me edit the 1st.
Am I missing any steps to do this or does this just not work?

If I remember correctly, in Windows the way to start a second project is to open one and then click New Project in the File menu. Having a project open and then going to the Start menu and trying to open it just brings up the existing project. If that is how you are doing it and it is not working for you, I am at a loss to help.
Are you trying to record in both projects at the same time? I can understand a device conflict happening in that situation.
It doesn’t work. Recording in Audacity locks out doing anything else in Audacity. My understanding is that this is necessary to allow continuous recording.
Any chance you know of another compatible program I can upload the cassette and then move it to audacity for the actual work?
Might there be another program compatible that would allow an upload from the cassette and move it after to let me actually edit the work in audacity?
I do what you are describing in one of two ways. Either I record to a hardware recorder and copy to a computer or record using Ocenaudio and edit in Audacity. I have the luxury of more than one PC to record and/or edit on.
I would add that I tend to record in batches and edit the same way.
There are devices for sale online that are basically a Sony Walkman with a patch cable that you connect to your computer. They are usually cheap in both price and build. You would be better off with an actual Walkman and a patch cable you probably already own.
If you don’t want to do the recording part on your computer, a field recorder can digitize the audio onto a file on an SD card which you can use to copy to your computer. Most consumer level field recorders that have an audio input can handle the output from a cassette player headset.
So I have the Walkman attached. My issue is I have about 75 tapes I need to upload, edit, and save. Since Audacity only lets me work on one of those at a time - is there a site that would either let me do both at the same time (one in each program) and that is compatible to convert from whatever the program is to the other?
Possible solution:
Record on one computer (#1), move the recording (.aup3 file) to another machine (#2) and edit there while computer #1 records the next tape.
The computers don’t need to use the same operating system, but the same version of Audacity is preferred.
I only have one computer…There’s no program I could upload the cassettes to and then convert it over to audacity when I’m editing?

Good luck! If you edit while recording, you take processing power from the task of recording, resulting in dropouts. I wouldn’t like this idea. But it is up to you…
I would recommend you buy a field recorder and some large micro SD cards. A Zoom H1essential would work, but any consumer level recorder with external input will do. Plug the cable from your Walkman into it and record away. Then transfer the files on the SD cards to your computer hard drive and edit them with Audacity while you continue to record with the Zoom.
I agree that a H1 (or similar) could be a good practical solution. Also, the sound quality from a field recorder is likely to be better than recording on a laptop. (I have an old H2 and the line-in recording quality is very good).
Yes, that’s the risk with doing other stuff while recording, and the worst part is that you may not notice the recording is skipping until much later, so you end up wasting much more time than you save. It “may” work flawlessly, but I’d not rely on it.
