Hi
I’m a bit of a techno geek
I have any external device that I want to record with Audacity.
I have connected via the headphone socket of my laptop with a 3.5mm jack lead.
How do I get to hear the sounds in Audacity please?

What kind of “device” and what kind of connection?

Sound comes out of the headphone jack.
The microphone jack on a computer is ONLY for a “computer microphone”.
If you have a mic/headphone combo jack, a regular TRS (3-conductor) headphone plug will work but it takes a TRRS (4-conductor) plug to make the microphone connection.
…If you have a line-level or headphone-level signal (like the analog output from a CD/DVD player etc.) you’ll need a USB audio interface with line inputs. Or, if you have a desktop/tower computer with a regular soundcard you can use the line input.
