Using version 2.4.2 on Windows 10 with Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface. With the prior Audacity version, overbub worked fine. With the new version, I could play back or record when the overdub function was off. With the function turned on, I got the 9999 error message. Now I can’t get it to play or record.
Can you help me with the proper settings?

Try resetting Audacity: “Tools menu > Reset configuration”.
Then restart Audacity.
Then check that the correct devices are selected in the Device Toolbar.
Then try a test recording.
If you are still having problems, after taking steve’s advice: Note that if the sample rate of your input and output devices are different, you can get this error. Check that the Audacity project rate (lower left-hand corner) and the Windows sample rates are the same. For the Windows rates, in the Windows search bar, enter mmsys.cpl, the for each of the Playback and Recording Tabs, select your device > Properties > Advanced > Default Format.
