Playback Recording

Hello,

Using Windows 10, Audacity 2.2.2. To record a song I use Memorex cassette recorder. When I listen to the playback, I noticed that background noise (tv, people talking) is being picked up over the song that was recorded. I have used Audacity before and never had this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Joanna

You were probably recording your laptop built-in microphone, not the tape machine itself.

You can drill down to the Windows control panels and see what your tape USB machine name is, and then select that name in the Audacity recording toolbar (next to the microphone symbol).

Right-click the speaker icon lower, right.

Then select Record…

All recording “things” in Windows appear as microphones, whether they’re actually microphones or not.

I’m assuming you have a USB connected machine.

The machine is not USB, it has a regular headphone jack that goes into the machine and computer. In Audacity, I changed the name and it would not record at all this time. When I left the name the same, it would record but still captured background noise.
